Ever wondered how Greenland got its name? Did you know that Greenland is part of Denmark and technically, it is categorized under North America, not Europe. “It is an autonomous administrative division within the Danish Realm between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Though physiographically, a part of the continent of North America, Greenland has been politically and culturally associated with Europe for more than a millennium”. (According to Wikipedia)
Anyhow, I was tempted to hop to Greenland when I was getting restless during my 1 week backpacking trip in Iceland. So I gamely paid for a super expensive air ticket (Air Iceland Flight 246) and spent 1 day in Kulusuk, an island closest to Iceland with a population of about 270 inhabitants.
Not doing any research beforehand and being the spontaneous me, I just booked the ONLY available hostel I could find online and up, up and away I went!
The first sight of Greenland was AMAZEBALLS. I’ve taken so many flights in my life but this windowseat view has gotta be one of my favourite!
After touching down, with no WIFI or GPS or MAPs available, I began the quest to locate my hostel. Firstly, there’s no road signs on this Kulusuk island. Secondly, as it was June, which was the beginning of summer, you can still see ice everywhere and snow ploughers digging pavements and roads for easier accessibility. Thirdly, there wasn’t anyone around. Sobs. Hard times ahead for this lonely, lost, hungry and tired solo female traveler. 😦

So, to keep the story short, I finally arrived at my hostel after 5 hours of wandering. It was an adventure in itself because I almost got (or so I thought) bitten by the stray dogs, slipped on ice ( I wasn’t wearing proper shoes), felt really lost cos my best friend Google wasn’t around to help at all. But lo and behold…TADAHHH…
As it was Summer, Greenland had 24 hours of daylight which was apt for me cos I only had a day. The midnight sun was intriguing to witness. I tried to catch some sleep though.

- JUST WALK AROUND THE ISLAND-You’ll get to see breathtaking Nature and observe how the locals pass their time.
- Winter Activities (dog sledding, Snowmobiling. Hiking. Ski Touring. Heliskiing. Trophy hunting. Climbing And Mountaineering. Diving.)
- Take a Boat and experience the gigantic icebergs just before your very eyes

Wow! This is so beautiful! I had always assumed that Greenland was part of Canada, but I was totally wrong. I knew the name was from the danish, but I just figured over the years it, like many others, had changed powers. This looks absolutely beautiful! I think this is one of the first blog posts I’ve ever read about a visit to Greenland! Thanks for sharing!
